InnerAct’s
Programs and Services
The major performance
As a theatre company, InnerAct has produced an average of one major
staged performance per season since 1999. Stage productions are
primarily works that depict accurate representations and the cultural
ideals and experiences of historical and contemporary African American
life.
The Mentorship
program
InnerAct’s mentoring program officially started in fall 2001 with the
primary purpose of providing high school and early level college
students with the opportunity to work hand- in-hand on productions with
industry professionals in the areas of directing, lighting, stage
design, costuming, sound, stage management, marketing, producing and
boxoffice. The goal is to expose and further student’s interests
in all areas of the arts, and to introduce them to professions and
employment opportunities not commonly considered in the respective
communities of the young adults we serve. Over the past 3
years we have mentored 45 students.
The
staged reading series
Since February, 1999, Staged readings have taken place annually and are
designed to nurture and develop the works of playwrights whose plays
center on the African American experience. All stage readings are
presented for the purpose of developing a work for possible production,
and they are a part of InnerAct’s Playwriting Development Series for
Artists of Color.
Playwright’s
Development Series for Artists of Color
Since the Company’s beginning its Playwriting Series has helped
artists/writer by serving as an ongoing resource where they can interact
and gain professional dramaturgy assistance from the staff and InnerAct
associates. Works and Artists Include: A Guest of Honor: The Scott
Joplin Story by Professor Michael Dinwiddie at NYU and Joy by
Jackie Alexander, winner of the Black Filmmakers Award.
Additionally,
the series furthers InnerAct’s mission by providing a professional
environment in the performing, multimedia and visual arts, wherein works
created by and for artists of color are developed and presented to the
community. The developed works are presented through the company’s
stage reading series.
Professional
Development Workshops for Actors
Beginning in the spring of 2000, the Actor Workshops are 2-hour lecture
and demonstration series offered to all performing artists, free of
cost. The workshops are run by the Artistic Director and a professional
practitioner of the field who specializes in the current workshop’s
focus, i.e., stage combat, Shakespearean interpretation, etc... This
supports the Company’s mission by providing a resource for artists of
color pursuing professional careers in theatre and the adjacent arts.
